Painting - 6 contemporary positions: Xerxes Ach, Michael Biberstein, Silvia Gertsch, Hanspeter Hofmann, Jahanguir, Alois Lichtsteiner

The only thing in common is simply the media: Painting. Maybe the origin: They are all Swiss, or part of a young or mid-career Swiss art scene although born in Germany (Xerxes Ach) or living and working in Portugal like Michael Biberstein (since 1978). At this point any similarity ends in this stimulating group show.

The results of the different painter's investigations could hardly be more different: Alois Lichtsteiners pasty mountain paintings meet Xerxes Achs sometimes stirring, sometimes contemplative color spaces, Hanspeter Hofmann's cheeky and provocative paintings gleam into the space, a new figurative work by Silvia Gertsch, painted behind glass, stands in dialog with Jahanguirs spacious, ornamental canvases and Michael Bibersteins sensitive, Asian inspired landscapes.

So, all these different statements are delicately tied by relations and formal or spiritual analogies. One can discover surprising moments, which is the big goal and challenge of such an accrochage.

The show will remain on view through Saturday, January 29, 2005 at the Jamileh Weber Gallery, Waldmannstrasse 6, CH-8001 Zurich.
