The Jamileh Weber Gallery Zurich is delighted to announce an exhibition of new paintings by Georg Baselitz.

"I think it is about time to look again at my old belongings, my childhood drawings and schoolwork: the eagle soaring above the mountains, the twisted pine from Darss, the chalk landscape with tree and bridge, the dam at the end of a sandy pond, the view of Kamenz village, the pre-alpine highlands, etc." - With this sentence, Georg Baselitz begins his catalogue essay and describes the source of his new paintings, continuing to reappraise his childhood in Saxony.

The new paintings surprise the viewer with shifting tonality and fluid linearity not yet known from Baselitz. The coloring is tender and has a translucent quality that reminds one of gigantic watercolors. In two monumental works in the show, "Der Weg nach oben" and "Ein Hund kommt zu spät", the clear atmospheric paint is combined and contrasted with carved, sculpted and painted frames, inspired by a large 16th century frame, which Georg Baselitz acquired in Italy in the summer of 2000. In these works the background starts to radiate and the motifs begin mysteriously to float.

With no doubt Georg Baselitz proofs once again in this show that he is the bravest of all the famous German post-war painters; with full respect devoted to history, never stuck in a routine, always fathom out the possibilities of painting.

The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue with an introduction by Georg Baselitz.

The show will remain on view through Saturday, May 5, 2001 at the Jamileh Weber Gallery, Waldmannstrasse 6, CH-8001 Zurich. Hours: Tuesday through Friday, 11am to 6pm, Saturday 10am to 4pm and by appointment.
