| A selection of new works by Alois Lichtsteiner, including paintings on canvas and on cardboard will be on view in the Jamileh Weber Gallery from February 10 through March 18, 2000. Reception of the show will take place Wednesday, February 9, from 6 to 8 PM.
The exhibition features recent work from the artist's cycles of "birches" and „books" as well as a selection of his well known "landscapes". But these working titles work only as a guideline for the viewer. In fact Alois Lichtsteiner refuses titles and he invites the viewer to participate in his main target: fathom out the possibilities of painting and the research of the brush stroke. The paintings oscillate between figurative associations and an independent, repetitive apply of colour. Best known for his pasty painting, Alois Lichtsteiner demonstrates in this exhibition the versatility of a theme with surprisingly different results in different scales. Born 1950 in Ohmstal, Canton Lucerne, formal art education at the Kunstgewerbeschule Zurich (1980-1983), simultaneously member of the artist group SILO culminating in group exhibitions at the Kunsthaus Zurich an the Kunsthalle Berne, various scholarships, special teaching post at the Ecole Cantonale des Beaux-Arts in Sion. Important museum solo exhibitions in Sion (1989), Kunsthalle Berne (1992) and Kunstverein Freiburg i.Br. (1992). Since 1997 exclusively represented by the Jamileh Weber Gallery. Lives and works in Murten, Canton Fribourg and Paris. Full bodies of his work are part of the collection of the Kunstmuseum Berne and Kunstmuseum Lucerne, the Hess Collection, Napa, California, London and Berne as well as literally in every important corporate collection in Switzerland.
