The Jamileh Weber Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition with the new works by Silvia Gertsch and Xerxes Ach under the title Venice Project.
The couple's new paintings came into being in their studio in Italy. Already the title Venice Project refers to both artists painting's very particular connection with colour and light. Venice is of outstanding importance for its art dominated by light and colour, for its glass paintings, its one of a kind life at the water and its specific atmosphere. The paintings by Silvia Gertsch are figurative, created in the technique of reverse glass painting. The work of Xerxes Ach is abstract, painted with egg tempera onto cotton. Again, the works of both artists complement one another creating a wondrous unity, as though they shared their origin, were somewhat related to each other. "Light is always my theme. Depicting light with colours." (Silvia Gertsch) The artist tracks down light outsides, by stepping out of an inside, for example down at the water in the summer or in the rush of the city. In her painting she tries to regain that light, stop it, capture it, make it undone, just like a déja-vu. Timeless luck, brought back into its own, is conveyed through Silvia Gertsch's works, shining in tender and fragile beauty, keeping in it its strong power. Xerxes Ach's intention behind his painting is the agitation of the senses solely by the means of colours. Layer by layer the artist puts on the paint: in highest perfection, until he gets the surviving shades of his paintings: seemingly detached from time and space, transcendent. The painting of Xerxes Ach is focussed on visualization and materialization of painting itself by its very own means, by, at the same time, always being reflection and unconditional dedication to seeing. The show will remain on view through Saturday, April 12, 2008 at the Jamileh Weber Gallery, Waldmannstrasse 6, CH-8001 Zurich. Hours: Tuesday through Friday, 11am to 6pm, Saturday 10am to 4pm and by appointment.
